Who are you when your past, your failures, and other people’s labels pull you in different directions?

By the time Moses encounters God at the burning bush, he has lived under many identities: condemned Hebrew infant, Pharaoh’s daughter’s son, member of the Egyptian royal household, fugitive, husband, father, shepherd, and failed would-be deliverer. So when God calls him to lead Israel out of Egypt, Moses asks a deeply personal question: “Who am I?”

God does not respond by telling Moses to look within himself, believe in himself, or remember how special he is. He answers, “I will be with you.”
