OS ID Check: The Windows vs. Linux Legal Divide
A new California law set for January 2025 will require Windows to collect user birthdates during setup to facilitate age verification for various applications. While this Digital Age Assurance Act aims to centralize data and reduce the need for multiple platforms to store private IDs, it raises significant privacy concerns regarding identity tracking. Interestingly, Linux distributions have secured a legal exemption because their open-source nature makes it impossible to hold a single entity accountable for compliance. This creates a distinct legal divide where proprietary operating systems act as identity hubs while open-source alternatives remain anonymous. Consequently, users may soon choose their software based on whether they want their operating system to manage their digital credentials.
