Episode notes
Your DC rowhouse wall is not a round number. Stock cabinets only come in 3 inch steps. Here is what actually happens in between.
Chris and Jessica walk through the three things that decide a Washington DC cabinet job: whether stock sizes fit a house built in 1912, how a delivery truck legally stops on a permit-parking block, and whether you need a permit at all. Most of this is not in any brochure.

SHOW NOTES:
Stock cabinet widths run 9 to 36 inches in 3 inch steps. Your wall is whatever it is, so every stock run ends in a filler strip, sold in 3 and 6 inch widths and cut down on site. More than about 6 inches of filler in one spot and the layout should change instead.
The ceiling maths: base cabinet 34.5 inches, countertop takes you to 36, standard gap to the wall cabinets is 18 inches, so their underside sits at 54 inches. A 36 inch wall cabinet finishes at 90 and leaves 6 inches for crown. A 42 inch cabinet finishes at 96, flush to an 8 foot ceiling with nothing to spare. Measure floor to ceiling at BOTH ends of the run.
Delivery in the District: DDOT sets the public space permit at $50 plus meter fees, caps occupancy at two days, and requires No Parking signs posted 72 hours ahead at an unmetered curb, or 24 hours at a metered one.
Permits: the DC Department of Buildings lists work that does not require a permit, and it names "papering, tiling, carpeting, floor covering, cabinets, countertops." A like for like swap is exempt. Move plumbing or electrical and an Alteration and Repair permit applies, and trade permits only go to licensed and bonded master trades.
Historic districts: the DC Office of Planning ties preservation review to work affecting the EXTERIOR appearance. A kitchen inside the envelope generally is not a preservation matter.
