#55 The Algorithm Wants You to Be a Noun. Be a Verb Instead.

It is curious how eagerly we settle into a fixed identity. As though the moment we name ourselves — I am this kind of person, this profession, this worldview — we have finally escaped the anxiety of becoming. But what we have actually done is drawn a fence around a wilderness.

Every label is a promise to the future that we will remain legible. We will stay inside the shape we have drawn. And yet, almost immediately, the shape begins to feel small. The discomfort that follows is not a flaw in our character. It is the wilderness pushing against the fence.

The one who no longer feels this pressure has simply forgotten the fence is there. They have confused the prison of self-description with safety. And that is a peace worth fearing.
