#51 What You Think Is Community Is Really a Pact of Mediocrity
Episode notes
A strange satisfaction comes from watching the numbers after you post. A like arrives, then another — each one a small quieting of a familiar restlessness. But the restlessness never stays quiet for long. Soon you need more. You begin to notice the patterns: which angles get the most taps, which phrases get shared. You adjust. The adjustments are small, reasonable. But slowly the thing you were doing becomes a different thing.
The mutual-boosting clusters are the naked form of this same logic: an explicit trade of attention, stripped of any pretense. Both parties receive what the platform recognizes. Neither receives anything from the other. And yet the underlying urge — to be reached, to be seen — remains unsatisfied. It is not that the numbers were too low. It is that what you actually wanted could never be given through that mechanism. The platform offers a proxy. The proxy looks like the real thing. But the dissatisfaction that persists tells you the truth, if you care to listen.
