Episode notes

Here is our first bonus episode explaining a technology that we believe will transform healthcare: 3D Printing. 3D printing is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file. The process works by laying down thin layers of materials then fusing the layers together to create objects that range in shape, size, rigidity and color.

Medical devices produced by 3D printing include orthopedic and cranial implants, dental restorations, external prosthetics like hands and legs and surgical instruments such as forceps, hemostats, scalpel handles and clamps.

With 3D printing some devices are printed from a typical design to create multiple identical copies of the identical device. Other devices, called patient-specific devices, are created from a particular patient’s imaging data.
