Discipleship in the early Church was not about vague ideals but about practical life with Christ. Today in Basil the Great’s Longer Rules we listened to his insistence that community life is where holiness is formed: one cannot live the commands of Christ in isolation, because love is only tested and refined among brothers and sisters. Paired with the early creeds, we see that discipleship was never a private spirituality but a covenantal way of life grounded in truth, worship, and accountability. The ancient Church reminds us that following Jesus is not simply believing, but learning to obey — together (John 13:34–35).
