In the third chapter of the three-part triplet arc, baby Randall takes his first steps and says his first word, closing the sequence that opened with Kevin and Kate. A teen flashback takes Randall and Jack to Howard University, where Randall encounters a Black student community for the first time and names the off-balance feeling he has carried his whole life as the only Black member of a white family. Jack responds by pulling over at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, revealing his brother Nicky's name on the wall and confessing he knows the same feeling from his return from the war. In the present, Shauna's gun charge is dropped and she arrives demanding Deja back.
