Episode notes

Why do Black folks turn EVERYTHING into a function? 😂

Somebody says, “I’m just grilling a little something,” and two hours later there are 37 people outside, three aluminum pans, a card table nobody remembers bringing, somebody auntie controlling the Bluetooth, and at least one person asking, “Who made this mac and cheese?”

In this episode of The Quiet Table with Mr. Hood, we get into the beautiful chaos of Black gatherings — cookouts, birthdays, graduations, moving days, repasts, baby showers, “just stopping by,” and those random get-togethers that somehow turn into a full-blown event.

And you KNOW it’s official when somebody pulls out a red cup, somebody says they’re leaving but stays another hour and a half, and food starts getting wrapped up before the function is even over.

But underneath all the jokes, there’s something real here too: Black folks have always known how to make joy out of whatever we’ve got. Food, music, laughter, family, friends, and a little bit of somebody being too loud in the background — that’s community.

So pull up a chair, grab a plate before somebody takes the good piece, leave the noise… and let’s talk about it.
