Episode #16 - Destiny Allred
Destiny Allred is a flight instructor, aspiring airline pilot, and self-described boat burner. After spending years on a path toward a career in pre-med and kinesiology, Destiny made the decision to walk away from everything she had planned and go all-in on aviation. No backup plan. No safety net. Just a commitment to making it work. In this episode, we talk about her upbringing, growing up as a tomboy, and why she was usually out playing sports while the other girls were doing "girl things." We dive into the mindset that helped her make such a dramatic career change, her experience at FLT Academy, and the challenges of navigating flight training from zero hours to CFI. We also get into her teaching philosophy as a flight instructor, the lessons she's learned from training students, and why "burn the boats" became the mantra that carried her through the toughest parts of flight school. Along the way, I explain why I think she's basically a honey badger. Relentless, stubborn in the best way possible, and impossible to discourage once she's decided on a goal. This is a conversation about betting on yourself, embracing uncertainty, and what happens when you're willing to leave your old life behind to chase something bigger.
Episode #15 - LT. COl. Matt "Pimptastic" Russell
Lt. Col. Matt Russell, callsign “Pimptastic,” is a U.S. Air Force F-16 test pilot, instructor at the USAF Test Pilot School, and one of the people helping shape the future of fighter aviation. Russell has over 21 years in the Air Force flying the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon and Northrop T-38 Talon, attended the United States Air Force Test Pilot School in 2011, and has spent more than a decade teaching and conducting advanced flight research. He served as Chief of Flight Test for the global F-16 fleet and recently flew the first flight of the Lockheed Martin X-62A VISTA, an experimental aircraft used to test AI-driven fighter tactics. In this episode we talk about Matt’s path into the military, what it takes to get into test pilot school, flying experimental aircraft, and what it was like dogfighting the world’s first AI-controlled fighter jet. We also get into the future of fighter aviation, the effort to “jailbreak” the F-16 to unlock new capabilities for pilots around the world, and how those lessons translate to airline flying and general aviation. Matt is also an airline captain flying the Airbus A321, a Subject Matter Expert on the F-16, and a designated pilot examiner for general aviation.
Cleard Episode 12 - Flying For the Regional Airlines
Ever wondered what flying for a major regional airline is actually like? We bring you two radically different perspectives from the flight deck based right here in the demanding Salt Lake City hub. We sit down with Captain Jeff Garn, a 30-year airline veteran whose seniority number is currency- something worth more than gold. He breaks down why seniority is everything and goes hard on the need to maintain stick-and-rudder skills against automation complacency. First Officer Jeff Perkins, also joins us on this episode. Perkins went from being a corporate Fuel Auditor for 10+ years to a pilot two years ago. He details his unique path, how living in base defeats the "Commuter Nightmare," and the real talk on low-seniority schedules. We get into the daily grind: what a 4-day trip truly costs you in time away, the criticality of the Pilot Monitoring role, and the sobering lessons from recent accidents that demand constant professional vigilance. It’s the raw reality of the airline career, from stability and high pay to the constant pressure of safety.
Cleard Episode 10 - Utah's Air Traffic Control Crisis
Explicit
In this raw, solo episode of Cleard, Drew dives deep into the ongoing U.S. government shutdown—now at 27 days as of October 28, 2025—and its devastating ripple effects on air traffic controllers, with a spotlight on Utah's skies. From the vast Salt Lake City Air Route Traffic Control Center to towers in Ogden, Provo, and St. George, controllers are working unpaid overtime amid chronic shortages, leading to delays, near-misses, and safety risks that threaten passengers, pilots, and cargo flows vital to Utah's tourism and tech economy.Unpacking the shutdown's roots in partisan gridlock (with a few light-hearted jabs at D.C.'s dysfunction), Drew explores national headlines of tower closures and second jobs for exhausted workers, then zooms in on local stories of Utah families rationing groceries and communities rallying with pantries and aid. Hear inspiring paths to becoming an air traffic controller through Utah programs at USU, UVU, and Weber State, plus actionable steps to support these unsung heroes— from calling reps to donating essentials.
Cleard Episode 9 - The Utah 99s
Think flying is a boys’ club? Think again. In this episode of Cleared, we spotlight the Utah 99s—a powerhouse group of women aviators defying gravity and stereotypes. We dive into what it takes to become part of this fearless flying sisterhood, the challenges of navigating a male-dominated industry, and why community is key for women in aviation. Whether you're an aspiring pilot or just love a good story of grit and turbulence, this one's for you.
Cleard Episode 7 - The Stevenson Brothers

Cleard Episode 4 - Jed & Carrie Malmberg
What happens when you chase the dream of becoming an airline pilot as a full-grown adult — and then the industry hits pause? In this episode, we sit down with Jed Malmberg, a CFI-turned-airline-hopeful, and his wife Carrie, to talk about the real-life turbulence of flight school in your 40s. From getting fired to airline hiring freezes, financial strain to emotional resilience, we explore the highs, lows, and everything in between — from both sides of the cockpit.
Cleard Episode 3 - Scud Airs Bret Kobe
This week on Cleard, I'm joined by Bret Kobe, the no-nonsense, all-heart owner of Scud Air Solutions. If you've spent any time around Utah aviation, you've probably run into Bret. Fresh off flying a Cessna 180 nicknamed "Beastwagon" to Oshkosh and back, Bret shares stories from the trip, why he still loves making that long haul, and what keeps him passionate about general aviation after all these years. We also talk about lessons learned, the flying war stories about 1 of his 7 engine failures he's run into, and his training philosophy. If you like your aviation talk unfiltered and full of real-world wisdom, this episode is for you.
#14 - Christian Davis KSPK Airport Manager
Christian Davis is the airport manager at Spanish Fork Municipal Airport (KSPK) and Vice President of the Utah Airport Operators Association. KSPK recently implemented landing fees and it sparked backlash in the GA community. Some pilots weren’t happy. Some left. So we sat down and talked about it. In this episode, Christian explains why the fees were introduced, how they’re tracked, where the money actually goes, and whether airports should be expected to operate without charging users directly. We also get into the realities of running a high-traffic non-towered airport, what growth looks like behind the scenes, and whether a control tower is actually on the horizon. We also talk about his life outside aviation. His hobbies, home life, and what it’s like being the guy making decisions that not everyone agrees with. This is a candid conversation about airport funding, pilot responsibility, infrastructure, and the future of KSPK.
