How the World Sees America: Lessons from the 2026 Best Countries Index
Episode notes
How does the world see America—and what difference does a country’s reputation really make?
Wharton Professor David Reibstein joins Chris Malone on The Unity Forum to discuss the 2026 Best Countries Index and what ten years of studying national reputations reveal about the changing perceptions of the United States and other countries around the world.
The 2026 study evaluates global perceptions of 85 countries across 73 attributes. Switzerland, Japan, and Sweden lead the overall rankings, while the United States ranks 11th despite continuing to receive particularly strong marks for economic influence, global connectedness, and consumer brands.
Reibstein explains how politics, economics, products, travel, media, entertainment, and major world events all contribute to a country's reputation—and why those perceptions can influence tourism, trade, foreign investment, and economic performance.
