Interview with Imperial College reGELerate

Join us in this episode of The Synwave Podcast where we interview a fellow UK iGEM team: The Imperial College London 2026 iGEM project, reGELerate, aims to overcome the limitations of conventional hydrogels when it comes to mechanical strength and enzyme immobilisation. Their goal is to shift from a synthetic, disordered polymer approach to utilising the self-repairing biological structural motifs of non-pathogenic fungal prions, ultimately engineering a superior biomaterial platform. This year they are competing in the Foundational Advances iGEM Village, which hosts projects targeting bottlenecks in the field of synthetic biology itself. reGELerate is developing a wet and dry lab toolkit to parameterize and predict emergent material properties for hydrogel research. In this episode we are going to discuss their framework and their competition prospects with Vasily and Hector. Interview with Dr. Leonidas Chouliaras

Dr. Leonidas Chouliaras is a consultant of old age psychiatry in the EPUT NHS foundation and an assistant professor and researcher at the University of Cambridge. He is an active researcher, helping us understand the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases. His research is focused on epigenetic mechanisms, blood biomarkers and neuroimaging in dementia, including Alzheimer's. Dr. Chouliaras' research is very relevant to our project since he has worked with epigenetic profiling in brain tissue and in blood and has identified biomarkers that can help make the diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases earlier. Alzheimer's Month and Current Treatments

As Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI) put it: September is World Alzheimer’s Month, an international campaign to raise dementia awareness and challenge stigma. Each year, Alzheimer and dementia associations, alongside all those involved in the treatment, care and support of people living with dementia, from around the world unite to organise advocacy and information provision events, as well as Memory Walks and fundraising days.
