EVER FORGET — A 9/11 TRIBUTE This special episode of The Phoenix Within is dedicated to the lives lost, the heroes who ran toward danger, the families forever changed, and a nation that will never forget. For me, September 11th is more than a moment in history. It is a memory I still carry—the shock of seeing the second plane hit and watching the Twin Towers collapse while riding a New York City bus on my way to school. 25 years later, we remember. We honor. We reflect. We remember where we were. We remember those we lost. We remember the courage that rose from unimaginable tragedy. September 11, 2001. Never forgotten. Always remembered.
THE PHOENIX WITHIN — SEASON 2 Episode 3: Rising Into the Next Version of Yourself What happens when the person you’ve worked so hard to become is no longer the person you’re meant to stay? In Episode 3, I reflect on growth, leadership, purpose, and the uncomfortable realization that sometimes your next level requires you to leave behind a version of yourself you once fought hard to become. As I continue striving to become a great Assistant Principal, I’m also wrestling with a new question: Is it time to stop preparing for what’s next—and start believing I’m ready for it? Maybe becoming the next version of yourself isn’t about changing who you are. Maybe it’s about finally having the courage to step fully into who you were becoming all along. The fire changed you. THE PHOENIX WITHIN — SEASON 2, EPISODE 4 Permission to Outgrow Yourself Growth sometimes means having the courage to release the version of yourself that got you here. In this episode, I reflect on 23+ years in education, my journey as an Assistant Principal, and the question I’m finally allowing myself to ask: What if it’s time to dream about becoming a principal? You are allowed to want more. You are allowed to evolve. You are allowed to rise. The Phoenix doesn’t ask permission from the ashes. It rises.
In this powerful and deeply personal episode of The Phoenix Within, Dr. Nicholas Donis wrestles with a question that has quietly begun shaping the next chapter of his leadership journey: What if it’s time? After 23 years in education and now serving as a Lead Assistant Principal, Dr. Donis reflects on how his leadership has evolved—from developing teachers and leading instruction to supporting a new instructional leadership team, mentoring new and returning Assistant Principals, coordinating campus-wide testing, and learning to lead other leaders. But this episode isn’t simply about becoming a principal. It’s about recognizing when your responsibilities, experiences, challenges, and even your fears may be preparing you for something greater. What happens when you stop asking whether you’re completely ready and start asking what you’re willing to become? Sometimes the Phoenix rises without knowing exactly where it will land. Sometimes it rises because it finally realizes it was never meant to stay in the ashes. Maybe the next chapter begins with one question: What if it’s time?
Following the previous episode, What If?, Dr. Nicholas Donis continues his personal leadership journey by shifting the conversation from imagining principalship to intentionally preparing for the next chapter. Drawing from his experiences as a Lead Assistant Principal, instructional leader, and campus testing coordinator, Dr. Donis reflects on the importance of developing others, strengthening systems, embracing uncomfortable growth, and recognizing that leadership development begins long before a new title is earned. This episode is a reminder that the journey toward what's next should never overshadow the impact we can make right now. Because the next chapter doesn't begin when someone gives you a title.
