The Morning Rundown, Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2026
Episode Notes – Tuesday, January 27, 2026 Crews across Southern Illinois continue snow cleanup efforts following a winter storm that brought more than a foot of snow to parts of the region. Officials warn that extreme cold and refreezing remain concerns this week. The Carbondale Warming Center has expanded operations and will remain open 24 hours a day through the week in response to the cold, with leaders citing safety and stability for guests during prolonged winter conditions. The union representing corrections officers at the Williamson County Jail has publicly opposed Sheriff Jeff Diederich’s reelection, citing concerns about staffing, morale, and leadership. The Southern Illinoisan has requested comment from the sheriff and is awaiting a response. Snow totals varied widely by location, with Johnston City, Elkville, Benton, and Murphysboro among the communities reporting about a foot of snow or more. Tuesday’s forecast calls for mostly sunny skies with a high near 31 degrees. Wind chill values could dip below zero at times, with gusty winds developing during the afternoon.
