In this episode we speak to one of the most recorded and visible percussionists in the industry, Bashiri Johnson. Brought up in the Bed-Stuy district of Brooklyn and mentored by the legendary jazz musician James Mtume, his career first took off in the late 70s after achieving a gold record for Stephanie Mills 'Whatcha Gonna Do With My Lovin'. Since then, his career has gone from strength to strength playing on era defining anthems by artists including Luther Vandross, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Miles Davis, and Aretha Franklin to name just a few. Most notably, he spent 20 years as the percussionist in Whitney Houston's live touring band. Furthermore, this is the first guest on the podcast who played at the iconic Live Aid concert providing backing for Hall & Oates and the iconic duet between Mick Jagger and Tina Turner.
