Ethics, Selling & an Exclusive Interview with Fraser Cook

What does it mean to sell plants ethically in a hobby where rarity, hype, conservation, sourcing, and profit are constantly colliding? In this episode of The Hoya Underground, we dig into the values behind plant selling, from responsible sourcing and honest pricing to provenance, sustainability, and the uncomfortable gray areas that come with a rapidly growing collector market. We also bring you a special interview with Fraser Cook, recorded live at IAS 2026, for a conversation about conservation, cultivation, wild-collected plants, and the complicated relationship between collectors, growers, sellers, and the communities where these plants originate. This one is less about telling people what to think and more about asking better questions: What responsibility do we have as sellers? Where does ethical collecting begin and end? And when money enters the picture, how do we make sure our values still have roots? You can reach Fraser at his instagram @botanicalotter

Special Guest Episode: Stuart Henderson of MV Orchids!

This week, we sit down with Stuart Henderson of MV Orchids to talk about Hoya breeding, growing from seed, and the wonderfully unpredictable process of creating something new. We get into pollination, seed collection, germination, choosing parent plants, seedling variation, and what makes a plant worth watching, propagating, or eventually naming. Stuart also shares insight into provenance, identification, and the patience required to raise Hoyas from seed. It’s a conversation about genetics, experimentation, and the long game of Hoya growing, including all the surprises that happen between making a cross and seeing what actually grows. If you’ve ever wondered where new Hoyas come from, this episode is for you. Find Stuart on Facebook or Instagram at MainlyVandas

Burnout or Fade Away

Burnout can sneak into even the things we genuinely love. In Episode 9, we have a conversation about what burnout looks like in the Hoya world, especially when collecting, selling, social media, community involvement, and the pressure to keep up all start piling on top of each other. This isn’t an episode about fixing burnout or giving you a five-step plan to get your spark back. It’s more about recognizing it, talking about what it feels like, and acknowledging that sometimes the hobby that normally gives you energy can start asking more from you than you have to give. We also reference Dr. Kristin Neff’s work on self-compassion and the idea of extending some of the same patience and kindness to ourselves that we would naturally offer to someone else who was overwhelmed. Mostly, this one is just an honest conversation about loving plants, loving the community, and still occasionally needing to say, “I cannot care about one more leaf today.”

The Hoya Market: What Goes Up Must Prop Down

In this episode of The Hoya Underground, we talk about the Hoya market and many of the things that influence what a plant is worth. What actually makes a Hoya rare? Why do some plants stay expensive while others drop in price incredibly fast? How much of it is supply and demand, and how much of it is hype? We talk about propagation, imports, social media, collector trends, pricing as a seller, and the very real temptation to buy a plant when everyone else suddenly wants one too. We also get into the difference between something being truly rare and simply being hard to find right now, plus why a Hoya can be worth $200 to one collector and absolutely not worth $200 to another. The Hoya market changes fast, and sometimes the plant you thought you had to have today is sitting on three sale posts six months from now. Because eventually, somebody takes a cutting. And what goes up must prop down.

The Scenic Route to Better Packaging

In this episode of The Hoya Underground, Emily and Michael follow an unexpected thread into the world of plant packaging. What begins as a conversation about eco-friendly materials expands into a thoughtful exploration of the choices behind every box: poly-fil, desiccant packs, recycled materials, and the quiet tension between practicality, sustainability, and protecting living plants in transit. This isn't a how-to guide or a list of best practices. It's a reflective conversation about the ongoing pursuit of better solutions, the value of questioning long-held habits, and the joy of approaching even ordinary tasks with curiosity, humor, and a willingness to keep learning. Sometimes the most interesting conversations begin with a cardboard box.

Catfished by a Hoya: The Mislabeled Plant Epidemic

Have you ever purchased a Hoya only to discover that the name on the tag might not match the plant in your hands? In this episode of The Hoya Underground, we explore the surprisingly common issue of mislabeled Hoyas and how plant identities can become muddled as names travel through collectors, vendors, imports, and social media. We discuss why this happens, why it matters, and how it impacts both new collectors and longtime hobbyists. Also included: Emily confidently attempting several botanical pronunciations. Michael and Emily engaging in plant nerd tangents. The realization that sometimes nobody actually knows what they're looking at. This isn't an episode about revealing culprits. It's about awareness, curiosity, and learning how plant names evolve as they move through the hobby. Come for the Hoyas. Live Arrival Guarantees: Truth vs. Reality

In this episode of The Hoya Underground, we pull back the curtain on one of the most misunderstood parts of the hoya plant world. Behind every guarantee is a seller calculating weather patterns, monitoring carrier delays, insulating boxes at midnight, and making impossible calls about timing, risk, and responsibility. We explore the tension between customer expectations and the reality of shipping living plants across the country, along with the emotional weight sellers quietly carry when a box is delayed, damaged, or lost despite every precaution taken. This is an unfiltered behind-the-scenes conversation about trust, pressure, liability, and the invisible labor that most buyers never see. If you’ve ever wondered what really happens before a rare plant reaches your doorstep, this episode is for you.
