Episode 49 - The Mental Game: A Conversation with Brandon Saho

Today, at FocalFlip, we’re joined by Brandon Saho — a former sports reporter from Cincinnati who walked away from his dream job to take on something even bigger: opening up real conversations about mental health. Brandon shares his life story of battling depression, suicidal thoughts, and alcoholism, and how those struggles led him to launch The Mental Game podcast — a space where athletes, artists, and public figures talk openly about the things most people keep hidden. We talk about what it really means to find purpose after pain, and why choosing to be vulnerable has become Brandon’s biggest strength. He also shares the heart behind his “You Are Loved” bridge sign campaign — a suicide awareness effort that places simple, hope-filled messages in places where people might be hurting the most. It’s all about reminding people they matter, even in their darkest moments. This is one of those conversations that sticks with you — raw, honest, and full of hope. If you’ve ever felt lost, alone, or unsure of your next step, Brandon’s story will remind you: healing is possible, and you're never as alone as you think.

Episode 48 - Jake Thelen - A Colonel's Commitment (HC CovCath Hoops)

In Episode 48 of The FocalFlip Podcast, I'm sittin’ down with Jake Thelen, the new head basketball coach at Covington Catholic High School — and let me tell you, this one’s cool. Jake’s story is what hard work, faith, and a love for the game is all about. Jake had a basketball in his hands probably before he could even talk — since he was 2 or 3 years old, folks around here could tell he had that spark. He went on to star at CovCath, and sits at #8 on the school’s all-time scoring list. From there, he took his talents to Bellarmine, playing under legendary Coach Scott Davenport for 3 years before taking his game overseas to Denmark for a year. After playing overseas, Jake realized that his love for the game would be through coaching, so while getting up early to work for his Uncle PJ at Pomeroy from 9 to 1, he'd spend time in between firing off emails to college coaches, chasing the next step. That hustle paid off — he started coaching at Louisville St. X, then landed at Indiana under Tom Crean, working with guys like Thomas Bryant and OG Anunoby. From there, he served as Director of Basketball Ops at Georgia where he followed Crean. After that he reached out to UC to coach and be polished under Wes Miller, and now… he’s back home. Head coach of the Colonels — right where it all started. What sets Jake apart isn’t just his résumé — it’s how he carries himself. The man flat-out loves this game. He’s got that uptempo, high-energy style, and he coaches with a fire that’s hard to miss. You’ll hear him say things like “The Standard is the Standard” and “It takes what it takes,” and he lives it every single day. He’s all about doing things the right way — no shortcuts, no excuses, just showing up and putting in the work. If you love basketball, or just a good story about a hometown kid making it big and giving back, this is one you’re gonna want to hear. Love Y'all, Mike

Episode 47 - Brantley - It's Simple, Just Be Kind

Episode 47 brings us Brantley. I met Brantley two years ago when I met his mother, Samantha. Samantha and I started dating two years ago and we didn't introduce each other to our children for a few months into us dating. Well, when I met her son Brantley, I was blown away. I thought, "there's no way this kid is real." And when I say that, I mean he's the sweetest, smartest, most creative kid I've ever had the opportunity to meet. No offense to everyone else, but that was 100% my observation of him. After getting to know him, I realized that this kid has a heart that is pure and he has simple little life lessons that all of us can learn from. Brantley talks about the importance of kindness in this episode and he really drives home a cool perspective on bullying. Why? Because he's been there before. Jump in here with me and blow this kid up! I love him to death and I'm blessed to have him and his family in my life today! Love Y'all Mike

Episode 46 - Quinton Day - Rook Digital Marketing

Episode 46 of The FocalFlip Podcast is a banger! Why? Because I sit down with Quinton Day — Founder of Rook Digital Marketing Agency and a true example of resilience and leadership. Quinton launched ROOK in 2016 with a mission to deliver custom digital marketing solutions that help businesses, organizations, and entrepreneurs rise above the noise. Built on a culture of empowerment, Rook stands as a testament to what happens when you refuse to quit — a mindset captured in Quinton’s favorite quote: "You never lose if you never quit." Quinton shares his life story of overcoming oral cancer, a battle that forced him to relearn how to speak and enunciate just a year ago. He opens up about his upbringing, his early days as a hooper, and how mental health shaped his personal and professional life. We also dive into some legit business advice, the inspiration behind Rook Sports — led by his son Aiden — and the unwavering support from his wife Kat, who encouraged him to "make his move." But we don't quit there, Quinton also offers his candid take on the state of government, the crisis in our food industry, and why he believes sugar is the number one drug silently harming our communities. This conversation is about more than business — it's about survival, vision, and taking bold action. If you’ve been waiting for a sign to make your move, this is it.

Episode 45 - Angel & Yamil Rondon - A Puerto Rican Perspective

Episode 45 is HERE! This one features Angel Rondon and his son, Yamil. Yamil, a Senior basketball standout at Newport High School is a well-known young man in the Northern Kentucky area and his pops, one of the coldest photographers around. Throughout this episode we talk about both of their love for the game of hoops and how they were brought up playing the game. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Angel’s playing days were a little different. Outdoors all of the time, rain or shine, no towels to mop up wet spots, only newspaper. Yamil, same thing. Except he grew up on the courts at Stringtown Park in Florence, KY. Everybody saw him, knew him (and his dad), and balled with him. Yamil, a shifty and finesse style point guard, has often drawn the responsibilities of being defended by the other teams better defensive players. As a matter of fact, Mike and Mil talk about the Newport Wildcats, what it is like being face-guarded in games and how that can impact you mentally when you play. Yamil also explains his mannerisms, on-court style of play, his love for people and Newport, and his love for one of his former coaches, Tim Sullivan. Together we all share stories, talk about the state of mental health in schools, and discuss what Mil’s experience was like making and playing for the Puerto Rican U17 National Team which earned him Gold Medal honors. Get in here for this one! It’s all about perspective. It changes everything. Truly. Love Y’all, Mike
