Episode notes

Autumn census day this year is Thursday 1 October 2026 — and most staffrooms treat it as an office-only admin task. It isn't. DfE's own funding documents show school funding runs on a lag: today's headcount doesn't fund today, it funds a chunk of next year. And it's not just the headcount — the same day's data feeds the deprivation (FSM6, meaning eligibility across the last six years, not just today), EAL, mobility and prior-attainment funding factors too. Four separate calculations, one Thursday, one shared source. We take all four in turn, and what actually goes wrong when one flag gets guessed instead of checked.

Actions for consideration

  • Say the sentence out loud to your staffroom the week before census day: here's the date, here's what it actually funds.
  • Ask class teachers to flag any pupil details that look out of date before the return locks — not to fill in the form, just to flag what they know.
  • Check whether your school treats FSM eligibility as "current day only" — it's a six-year window (FSM6) for funding purposes.
  • Cross-check any pupil whose circumstances changed over summer (house move, eligibility change) before the census return is submitted.
  • Know the exact autumn census date each year and put it on the staffroom calendar, not just the office diary.
