Mastery Learning's +5 Months Rests On An 80% Threshold
Episode notes
A real catch-up register: same subtraction skill, three attempts in one week, until a pupil clears 80% while the rest of the class moves on to fractions. That's mastery learning in practice — keep the standard fixed, vary the time it takes to get there. The EEF Toolkit's own average is +5 months' additional progress, but this is the shakiest headline figure this show has used: low evidence security, real variation underneath, strongest specifically for primary pupils and for maths. We also separate it from a related but genuinely different idea, explicit instruction — EEF's own "five-a-day" teaching habits, evidenced specifically for pupils with SEND, not a blanket claim for every classroom.

Actions for consideration:
- Check whether your scheme of work has a genuine, timetabled second attempt for pupils who don't clear a check first time — or whether "moving on anyway" just quietly happens.
- If you run reteach/catch-up groups, build in a collaborative element rather than solo repetition — the strand's highest-impact studies did.
- Don't assume the +5 months figure travels evenly across phases and subjects — it's strongest for primary and for maths specifically.
- When a pupil doesn't clear a check, book the reteach slot in the diary immediately, not "when there's time."
- Keep explicit instruction and mastery learning as separate ideas in your own planning language — related, not interchangeable.
