Episode notes

What happens when a mountain that has looked stable for centuries suddenly gives way?

In this episode of The Climate Translation, Dr. Mac explores how glaciers, frozen ground, fractured rock, and gravity work together to shape the stability of high mountain environments. Using the August 2026 collapse at Langtang Lirung in Nepal as a case study, he explains how rock and ice can break loose, race downhill, and trigger a cascade of debris flows, blocked rivers, and flooding far downstream.

The episode also examines what scientists can and cannot say about the role of climate change. Warming temperatures are shrinking glaciers, thawing permafrost, and changing how water moves through mountain rock, but that does not mean climate change can be blamed for every individual collapse. Instead, the science shows how a warming climate can alter the conditions that help determine whether a mountain slope remains stable.
