Episode notes

You can buy a condom at almost any Nigerian pharmacy today, but getting it there was a journey that took five centuries. This episode traces the storied history from a linen sheath that an Italian anatomist said he tested on 1,000 men in 1564, to Casanova, Charles Goodyear's rubber, and the Comstock laws. It then covers the world war and the AIDS crisis. Through all of it, the argument stays the same: public health against moral objection. Whichever side won at any given moment decided how many people got pregnant, and how many people died.
