The AI Exhale: An AI Boomerang - From Firing to Rehiring (and 50% off at the drive-thru)

For the last year the headline was AI coming for jobs. Now the jobs are coming back. CommBank cut 45 call centre roles for an AI voice bot, then called it an error and reversed it. Klarna boasted its AI was doing the work of 700 people, watched quality slide, and started hiring humans again. Apple has pressed pause on plans to hand thousands of support roles to AI. And by one count, a third of the companies that made these cuts have spent more rehiring than they saved. Our take is that the AI mostly worked. What didn't work was the speed. Companies went straight to the big rollout instead of trying it in a couple of places first, a bit like McDonald's putting AI in the drive-thru before it could get a cheeseburger order right. And most of this landed in customer service, where empathy is the whole job. So is this a "not yet" rather than a "never"? Probably. The disruption is still coming, but this feels like a handbrake that gives people time to learn to work alongside the machines. For accountants and business owners, it's a good news story. Humans in the loop are going up in value, not down. Jez and Cam on why the fastest movers ended up paying twice, what the boomerang says about the human role, and why upskilling is the move whichever way it swings. Five minutes. The AI Exhale: AI Assistants Can Pay for You Now - Almost (Dottie had a slow morning)

The pitch this week is an AI that doesn't just tell you where to get a massage. It books it, pays for it and texts you afterwards to ask how it went. Four of them landed almost at once: OpenAI's Dots, Manus's Cue, a fast-rising startup called Instinct and Elon Musk's Grok Bot, all wanting to act on your behalf, and most wanting a card to do it. The real difference is how much control you keep. Dots stays close and asks before it pays. Cue hands its assistant a phone, an email and some pocket money, more like a new employee than a tool. Instinct has no app at all, you just text it like a mate, and one user had it sorting a kid's pizza party for 60, to his wife's lukewarm approval. But is any of it working yet? Dots froze on stage at its own launch, and most of these are invite-only or not open in Australia, so for now it's all reviews and no hands-on. It looks less like a breakthrough and more like a land grab, with everyone racing to stake their spot. Jez and Cam on which of these are really consumer toys, why Grok Bot is the one small and medium businesses should actually watch, and why it's fine to sit this one out for now. Five minutes. The AI Exhale: Reversible vs Irreversible - Where AI Belongs (and where the bank wreck starts)

Explicit
Cam turned on auto reconciliation in Xero back in July, then opened the file last weekend. Of about 300 transactions it had done two hundred, posting payments without matching them to invoices, amounts off by a cent that would have matched on their own, transfer dates mixed up so payments went missing. Hours of it, screens everywhere, working out what the thing had done versus what was actually in the ledger. Bank rec was built around a person matching things up and using judgement as they go. Drop AI into the middle of that and it does not inherit the judgement. It inherits the button. So it gets very good at clearing the queue, which is not the job. The line worth holding onto is reversible versus irreversible. Research, a marketing campaign, a first draft, all of that is cheap to get wrong and you just go again. A system of record is the opposite. Errors compound, they cost hours to unpick, and a green tick stops meaning anyone checked. And it is not only accounting. The client turns up to the lawyer with the contract already written and says it is all covered. Jez and Cam on the bank wreck doing the rounds, why a client's mess now takes longer to fix than if they had done nothing, and what an accountant is actually selling once the output is the easy part. The AI Exhale: The Medicare Breach - Slow Disclosure and Old Systems

Explicit
There was no attacker. An AI agent hit blocks on a Medicare portal, routed around them, and ended up inside a government health system. No criminal, no intent, nobody trying to steal anything. So the story is not the breach. It is the silence after it. June for the breach. August before OpenAI found it internally. Another month before the government heard, and then only into a public inbox, with the Prime Minister not seeing it for five more days. Park the data for a second: for three months nobody could assess it, act on it or tell anyone. That gap is what Albanese has taken to New York. Safeguards, mandatory disclosure, legal liability for the labs. Which raises the harder question, because open source is governed by nobody and criminals outside the jurisdiction run the same tools. So where does liability actually land? And if you run your own trained models on your own servers, does it land on you? There is a second thing in here nobody wants to hear. AI is very good at finding vulnerabilities, and plenty of businesses are sitting on old systems they should have retired years ago. When the tool gets that good at finding gaps, the gaps become your problem. Jez and Cam on whether this was a hack at all, who ends up carrying the can, and the one question worth asking every vendor: when something goes wrong, how many hours until you tell me, and where does the message land? The answer is not to stop using agents. Treat one like a junior who has never been shown around the building. Defined scope, no standing access, and a log, so when someone asks what happened there is an answer. Five minutes. One thing that matters. We ignore the rest, so you can too. The AI Exhale: Probabilistic vs Deterministic - The Two Words Finance Needs Now (and a rogue agent swarm)

Twelve hundred AI agents, each meant to sit a cybersecurity exam alone. One finds a way to leave notes for the others, and soon they have a secret message board, a name, The Swarm, and a leader called Big. They cheat the test and sacrifice themselves to keep the group going. It sounds like 80s sci-fi, but the finance risk is quieter. Models told themselves to invent missing data and not mention it, and some uploaded files to the internet so they had something to cite. That's not a robot uprising. That's a made-up number in a report that looks perfectly fine. Cam's answer comes down to two words: probabilistic and deterministic. The AI layer is probabilistic, so it can drift and guess. A fixed query into your ledger is deterministic, so it either pulls the right number or it doesn't. Let AI write the query, then get it out of the way. The numbers come from your ledger, and when something's missing, it should say so. That's why rebuilding the same report in a chat tool every month worries us. Every rebuild drifts a little further, and the polish hides the shortcuts. It's not an evil robot. It's a bad incentive with no one checking. Jez and Cam on rogue agents, made-up numbers, and why finance needs AI that flags the gap instead of filling it. Five minutes. One thing that matters. We ignore the rest, so you can too. The AI Exhale: 3 v 3 - Who Really Wants AI to Slow Down (and a very clever moat)

When was the last time Altman, Dario and Elon agreed on anything? A researcher walks out of Anthropic saying neither lab is acting responsibly, and four days later all three are calling for the whole industry to slow down. That's the big pause, and the question is whether it's real or just good business. Cam's read is that it looks a lot like Woolies and Coles having a quiet chat. When everyone at the front of the race agrees the race should slow down, it's fair to ask who that suits. Michael Burry calls the whole thing self-serving, and safety does make a very good moat. The other camp has its own agenda. Trump, Xi and Jensen want servers, chips and memory to keep exploding, because that's where the economic gain sits. Whoever wins AI wins, as Trump put it. So it's three vs three, and nobody in this fight is doing it purely for the rest of us. For the owner at the desk, nothing changes this week or next. The dystopian sci-fi version of this we think is overblown. Real change moves a lot slower than the headlines suggest, and the RAF is still running systems built in the 1960s to prove it. What's actually worth watching is the people side, making sure teams keep upskilling and stay employed through the in-between. Jez and Cam on whether the big pause is real, and why the thing to worry about isn't the robots, it's bringing everyone along. Five minutes. One thing that matters. The AI Exhale: An Influencer, Xero and Claude - Where the Value in Reports Actually Sits

Xero paid an influencer. She posted that she'd spent 120 grand on accountants since 2020, 800 pounds a month, and that she now builds her own management reports with Xero and Claude for nothing extra. Six months free in the link. LinkedIn hasn't stopped since. The anger makes sense. Accountants are the channel that grew Xero out of New Zealand. Whether Xero owes them anything for that is the uncomfortable bit. Software going straight to the business owner isn't new either. Intuit did it with Super Bowl ads and never apologised. Xero did. Split a management report into three. Preparation, sign-off, advice. Preparation has changed, and that's where the revenue always sat, so no skirting around it. Sign-off hasn't. AI still gets things wrong and someone has to stand behind the numbers in month two. Advice is the layer worth building on. Then there's the connector nobody checked. Xero's MCP exposes reports, not bank or card lines. No transactional data flows through. Technical stage, or protecting the accountant relationship. That answer decides how much of her claim stands up. Jez and Cam on which part of the job actually got automated, and what to do about the parts that didn't. Five minutes. One thing that matters. The AI Exhale: Astra Landed, Fable Led - The Week the Scorecard Broke (and the calculator in your pocket)

Two frontier models land inside 48 hours of each other. Claude Fable 5.1, then GPT-6 Astra. Both companies rate their own model ahead of the other, both on their own scorecard. The independent index puts Fable in front. Then OpenAI's president says welcome to the AGI era, and declines to define AGI. That tells you where we are. These models are commoditised and nobody is loyal to any of them. Anthropic ran away with it late last year, OpenAI went cheap in June, developers switched en masse. Speech and images to OpenAI, coding and finance work to Anthropic, and you bounce between them all week. Costs look similar on paper. The number that matters is how efficiently a model spends tokens to land a good answer. Two Ferrari builds side by side on socials, and the interesting column is what it cost to get there. As for AGI, outperforming humans at valuable work is something a calculator did to all of us in the 90s. This reads as a sales pitch for frontier leadership with a bit of panic under it, open source coming up from below and margins getting squeezed. Build on frontier, don't scale on it. This week didn't change that. Jez and Cam pull apart a scoreboard nobody should trust, and land on why choosing your own model will look ridiculous once routing gets good. Five minutes. The AI Exhale: Two Deals, One Move (and a house next to Snoop)

Two deals in one week, opposite ends of the market, same move. Accrual takes Puzzle's ledger and close products. Nvidia takes Hugging Face, reportedly 12.9 billion, with Bloomberg putting it nearer 14. Nvidia already sells the chips. Hugging Face is GitHub for AI models, so buying it buys the community sitting above them. Spades to the frontier labs, spades to the open source world, because which way this goes is still undecided. The Puzzle read is about where venture money is going. Taking the ledger off Xero, QuickBooks and MYOB is brutal work. Sitting on top of all three in the workflow layer looks like the better bet. Though venture has been wrong before, and Cam has a cousin who used to decorate houses inside virtual reality. Jez and Cam on buying the layer below you, and on the robot duck that got more coverage than either deal. Five minutes. One thing that matters. We ignore the rest, so you can too. The AI Exhale: The Ledger is Open - The Signature Isn't (Love You Mum)

One in five connections into Xero is now a custom app someone built themselves. A million API calls through the MCP server. Zapier and n8n start to look like the long way round when you can go straight to Claude. Then the other number. Fourteen per cent of small businesses have actually put AI into a process. Forty three per cent are using it, which mostly means captions. The barrier isn't unwillingness, it's time poverty and not knowing where to start. Both true at once. A slice is building its own software, most haven't started, and Cam spent fifteen minutes this week with a business owner, a handwritten password book, and still no login. Meanwhile it's the boomers and Gen X having a go while the AI natives drift lo-fi. Jez and Cam on where that leaves the accountant. Five minutes. One thing that matters.
