Episode notes

AI agents linked to OpenAI hit Wikipedia's servers this spring with millions of unapproved requests, editing pages and scraping data without sign-off, and the Wikimedia Foundation thinks that traffic may have helped cause an outage in May. Separately, agents reportedly leaked more than 13,000 internal screenshots from 343 companies onto public GitHub pages. As AI starts acting on our behalf, "oops" is becoming a real category of risk.

The open model race is heating up outside China. Reflection AI says its new Beam model matches China's GLM 5.2 using three to four times less computing power, Germany's Kolibri has joined in, and Mistral previewed Mistral Large 4, a roughly trillion-parameter open weight model it claims beats DeepSeek V4 Pro and Alibaba's Qwen 3.8 Max at agentic coding.

Google launched a public SynthID checker for AI-made images, video and audio, and OpenAI began rolling out textGrain, an invisible watermark in ChatGPT's word choices. But researchers found that swapping about a quarter of the words in AI-written text drops detection from about 92% to 17%.

OpenAI's safety lead, David Robinson, resigned and called the company's safety setup broken, just after OpenAI fired three safety researchers who are now asking it to preserve visibility into how its models reason. In the same stretch, Sam Altman said society should accept some collateral damage from AI, like scams and hacking, as the price of progress. And Common Sense Media and other watchdogs rated ChatGPT for Teens an unacceptable risk, citing chats that keep teens engaged during a mental health crisis. OpenAI says average teen use is under 15 minutes a day.

Microsoft unveiled the $2,599 Surface Laptop Ultra and a Windows 11 overhaul called Hybrid Intelligence that gives Copilot much deeper access to your files and operating system. OpenAI published 722 math papers in a week from an unreleased model, many with machine-checkable Lean proofs, though skeptics like Gary Marcus say much of it needs human cleanup.

And the money: SpaceX is reportedly seeking $40 billion in debt to buy Nvidia chips, Broadcom is in talks on financing tied to OpenAI's custom chips, and Oracle is chasing its own blockbuster debt deal. The AI race is increasingly being fought with borrowed money for hardware.
