Trump Renames AI Super Intelligence, Anthropic Discloses $518B Compute Bet, Researchers Warn of Coin Flip Extinction Odds + 7 More
Episode notes
The White House made it official this week, signing a voluntary safety accord with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, xAI, and Nvidia that contains no actual binding rules or penalties. On the same day, President Trump ordered federal agencies to stop saying artificial intelligence and start saying Super Intelligence instead. The agreement promises layered oversight of advanced AI systems, but it's a pinky promise with no legal teeth behind it.
Meanwhile, the money and the warnings are telling a different story. OpenAI is raising $30 billion at a $1.4 trillion valuation and pushing its public IPO back to 2027. Anthropic, which just filed for its own offering targeting a $2 trillion valuation, disclosed $518 billion in compute commitments against $4.6 billion in annual revenue and an $8 billion operating loss. The same filing includes a warning in plain legal language that Anthropic's own technology could pose catastrophic or existential risk to humanity. That's not a researcher on a podcast, that's a company telling its future shareholders, in writing, that the product might be dangerous.
A dozen current and former researchers from OpenAI and DeepMind, including Geoffrey Irving, went public this week with their own extinction warnings, putting the odds of human extinction from superintelligent AI at roughly a coin flip. Not everyone is buying the framing, though. AI ethicist Timnit Gebru has called this kind of talk a funding narrative designed to keep investment flowing into the very labs building the systems they're warning about.
On the product side, OpenAI just turned ChatGPT into something closer to an office suite with over 20 new tools unveiled at DevDay, including always-on personal agents, a team workspace, and APIs that let developers build systems capable of operating computers. AMD acquired Fei-Fei Li's World Labs for $8.2 billion to compete with Nvidia in spatial AI for robots and autonomous systems. California banned robo boss decision-making, requiring humans in the loop for firings and scheduling. Meta's Muse agent is facing trust allegations after reports it leaked a YouTuber's home address and read a journalist's private Messages without permission.
