Episode 0: Welcome to The Action Lab.
In this introductory episode, host Satya Burgess shares the story behind the podcast and explores one central question: what is the opposite of apathy?
The answer? Action.
From beginning her advocacy journey at just 11 years old to founding Earth Guardians Sri Lanka, Satya reflects on the experiences that shaped her understanding of activism, environmental justice, social justice, and the power of collective action.
This episode explores:
- Satya’s journey into environmental advocacy and activism
- Why environmental and social justice are deeply interconnected
- The overwhelming nature of living in a world with constant exposure to injustice, conflict, climate disasters, and suffering
- The importance of rest while recognising the difference between rest and apathy
- What “action” actually means, and why it looks different for everyone
- Why advocacy takes many forms, from organising and campaigning to art, education, volunteering, fundraising, and conversation
- Why ordinary people often underestimate their collective power
- What listeners can expect from future episodes of The Action Lab
Throughout this podcast, we’ll be speaking with activists, organisers, educators, artists, researchers, and changemakers working across a wide range of movements and causes.
We’ll explore their journeys, their successes and setbacks, the issues they care about, and, most importantly, the practical ways that all of us can take action.
Here's to action over apathy.
