Episode notes

In this episode of The Accent Journey, we take a closer look at the American English dark L - the version of L you hear in words like milk, feel, cold, and help.

Many English learners are familiar with the clear or “light” L at the beginning of words like lip and lake, but the L sound can change dramatically depending on where it occurs in a word.

A light L is typically heard at the beginning of a syllable, as in:

  • lip
  • lake
  • light
  • love
  • long

The tip of the tongue touches the area just behind the upper teeth, while the rest of the tongue stays relatively relaxed and forward.

A dark L, on the other hand, commonly occurs at the end of a syllable or before another consonant:

  • feel
  • milk
  • cold
  • help
  • all
  • film

For the dark L, the back of the tongue rises toward the soft palate. This gives the sound its deeper, darker quality. Listen to the episode for more instruction and practice for this key sound in American English.

Practice Dialogue

A: Did you leave the milk in the refrigerator?

B: Yes, it’s still there on the bottom shelf.

A: Great. I also need to call the hotel.

B: The hotel about the room?

A: Yes. I want to make sure everything is still available.

B: Okay. Call them before you leave.

Practice Passage: "I called the hotel to make sure everything was still available. They told me the small room was on the third floor, and breakfast was included in the total. I felt a little tired after the long trip, but the hotel was comfortable, the room was clean, and the staff were helpful. Overall, it was a really good place to stay.
