This week the Satirists decided to talk about a masterpiece for a change in their discussion of the classic, animated film, Princess Mononoke, which was also the patron’s choice for this month. Their analysis covers a wide range of topics, including nature versus civilization, the ideal of balance, and the nature of toxic goo. The audience perspective character, Prince Ashitaka (meaning brighter tomorrow), shows us a version of a warrior that is a true protector and peace-keeper, who seeks to find balance and harmony between humans and nature. Meanwhile, San, the titular character Princess Mononoke (meaning vengeful forest spirit), and Lady Iboshi represent the opposing forces of the forest spirits and human civilization.
