The Whole Story of Christmas (January 4)

The Whole Story of Christmas The Christmas story does not end with a peaceful manger, shining star, and visiting Magi. In Matthew’s Gospel, the joy of Epiphany is followed by fear, violence, escape, and lament. In this Sunday Spark Sermon, Pastor Zach invites us to embrace the whole story of Christmas—not only the parts that comfort us, but also the parts that challenge us. As the Magi return home by another road and the Holy Family flees across a border into Egypt, we are asked to consider what faithful resistance, justice, compassion, and love of neighbor look like in a world where “Rachel still weeps.” When God gives God’s own self to us in Jesus, what part of ourselves are we willing to give back?

Living Into Our Baptism (January 11)

What does baptism mean when we cannot remember the moment it happened? In this Sunday Spark Sermon, Pastor Zach reflects on the baptism of Jesus and the grace God offers through our own baptism. Whether we were baptized as infants, young people, or adults, baptism is more than a single event. It is the beginning of a lifelong journey of growing in faith, love, justice, mercy, and humility. As Jesus enters the waters of the Jordan, he stands in solidarity with humanity and prepares for the ministry ahead. In those same waters, our stories meet his. We are reminded that baptism is not primarily about what we do, but about what God does—offering forgiveness, a new identity, the gift of the Holy Spirit, and a calling to live as people of grace. Come and See (January 18)

What are you looking for—and what might others discover when we invite them to come and see? In this Sunday Spark Sermon, Pastor Zach reflects on Jesus’ simple but powerful invitation in John 1. As Andrew, Philip, and Nathanael begin to follow Jesus, questions of trust, skepticism, prejudice, and testimony quickly rise to the surface. This message asks us to consider what our lives—and our church—show others about Christ. Do our words and actions bear the fruit of faith, hope, and love? Are people truly welcomed as they are? And when others look at the United Methodist Church of Danielson, what good do they see? Jesus’ invitation still stands: Come and see.

Christ Is Not Divided (January 25)

What holds the church together when the world—and sometimes the church itself—seems determined to pull us apart? In this Sunday Spark Sermon, Pastor Zach reflects on Paul’s words to the divided church in Corinth and reminds us that no pastor, politician, denomination, or worldly leader can take the place of Jesus Christ. The church has disagreed over leaders, traditions, theology, politics, and practice throughout its history. Yet the center of our faith remains unchanged: the good news of Jesus Christ and the person of Jesus as our ultimate significance. In a world filled with unrest, injustice, and division, we are called to keep our eyes on the cross, remain united in Christ, and continue his mission of preaching, serving, healing, and witnessing to God’s kingdom. The cross may look foolish to the world, but for us it remains the power of God, the source of our hope, and the reminder that Christ is not divided.

When Everything you know is wrong (February 1)

What happens when the wisdom of God turns everything we think we know about power, success, and strength upside down? In this Sunday Spark message, Pastor Zach explores the surprising wisdom of the cross through the Beatitudes, Paul’s words to the church in Corinth, and Micah’s call to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God. The world often tells us to pursue status, certainty, influence, and control. The gospel points somewhere else—to humility, mercy, peacemaking, compassion, and a crucified Christ whose apparent defeat becomes the sign of God’s victory. This sermon invites us to ask whether we are “foolish” enough to trust God’s wisdom, choose life, and let Jesus—not power, politics, or prestige—be our ultimate concern.

Even When Your Voice Shakes (February 8)

What does it look like to speak the truth of the gospel when doing so feels uncomfortable, unpopular, or even frightening? In this Sunday Spark message, Pastor Zach reflects on Paul’s proclamation of Christ crucified, Jesus’ call for us to be salt and light, and Isaiah’s vision of a faithful people who loosen the bonds of injustice, care for the vulnerable, and become “repairers of the breach.” This sermon reminds us that God’s wisdom often looks foolish to a world built on power, division, and fear. The message of the cross calls us instead toward humility, mercy, justice, solidarity, and courageous truth-telling. We may feel weak. Our knees may shake. Our voices may tremble. But the church is still called to shine light into dark places, bring the flavor of God’s kingdom into the world, and preach the gospel—even when our voice shakes.

Multiplying Love: Always Renewing (February 22)

Lent begins in the wilderness—but God is already making something new. In this first message of our five-week Lenten sermon series, Multiplying Love, Pastor Zach reflects on Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness and Isaiah’s promise that God is always renewing—making paths through the wilderness and ways through the desert. Jesus refuses the temptation to use power for spectacle, self-interest, or easy answers. Instead, he chooses trust, service, generosity, and faithfulness to God. His example challenges us to ask not only how we respond to immediate need, but how love can be multiplied in ways that create deeper care, justice, dignity, and community. As we begin this Lenten journey, we are invited to leave behind scarcity, fear, and familiar patterns that no longer give life. God is still doing a new thing, still renewing us, and still calling us forward. This is where the journey of multiplying love begins.

Multiplying Love: Love Is the Highest Gift (March 1)

What happens when love asks us to go somewhere new? In this second message of our five-week Lenten sermon series, Multiplying Love, Pastor Zach reflects on the call of Abram and Sarai to leave behind what was familiar and journey toward the land God would show them. Woven together with Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 13, their story becomes a reminder that love is not simply something we believe in—it is something that moves us. Love is patient. Love does not insist on its own way. Love listens, trusts, goes, serves, and sometimes asks us to release the plans we had for ourselves in order to follow where God is leading. Sharing part of his own family’s journey from Illinois to Connecticut, Pastor Zach explores the difference between the faith we believe and the faith by which we live. God’s call may take us across the country, across the street, or simply toward a person we never expected to love. As we continue Multiplying Love, the invitation is simple: listen for where God is calling, look for where you can be a blessing, and go—for love. Because when everything else fades, love remains.

Multiplying Love: Why We Need to Embrace Unity (March 8)

What if unity does not mean becoming the same—but learning how to become whole together? In this third message of our five-week Lenten sermon series, Multiplying Love, Pastor Zach reflects on Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well and the deep divisions between Jews and Samaritans. Their conversation becomes a powerful picture of what reconciliation can look like when we choose humility, patience, truth, and love over hostility and inherited division. Unity is not uniformity. It is not conformity. It is the difficult and holy work of being joined together across differences, listening for understanding, confronting the wounds of our shared histories, and allowing God’s love to break down the barriers that keep us apart. As we continue Multiplying Love, we are reminded that reconciliation is part of the church’s calling. Division cannot build God’s kingdom. Prejudice cannot survive the work of love. And hate cannot repair what has been broken. Only love can do that. So where is your heart? And are we willing to follow Jesus toward one another?

On the Road, At the Table (April 19)

Where do we encounter Christ—and will we recognize him when we do? In this Sunday Spark message, Pastor Zach reflects on Jacob’s realization, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it,” alongside the story of the disciples traveling to Emmaus. On the road, Jesus walks beside them in their confusion and grief. At the table, their eyes are finally opened, and they recognize that Christ had been with them all along. This sermon reminds us that God is present in the places we have been, the places we are now, and the places we are going. Christ meets us in Scripture, in shared meals, in strangers, and in one another. The question may not simply be whether we recognize him—but whether we are willing to invite him in.
