The Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash occurred on October 20, 1977, when the band's chartered plane, a Convair CV-240, ran out of fuel and crashed in a swamp near Gillsburg, Mississippi. The crash killed lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, backup singer Cassie Gaines, assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, and both pilots. The band was en route from Greenville, South Carolina, to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, for a concert. Many other members and crew suffered severe injuries. This tragedy marked a devastating moment in rock history, cutting short the lives of key band members and profoundly affecting Southern rock's legacy.
