REVEALED! The Official Dakota Resident Memo After John Lennon Was Attacked
by Scott Cardinal
In this haunting episode of Strange History Cafe, we step into the shadow of one of the most shocking moments in modern music history. On December 9, 1980—just hours after John Lennon was assassinated outside his home—I read aloud a rare, never-before-heard-on-podcast primary source: the official letter sent by The Dakota’s Board of Directors to every resident. From the elegant letterhead to the somber tone, this document reveals how a luxury New York apartment building suddenly transformed into a fortress overnight. I discuss the immediate security measures, the raw grief of the residents, the frantic implementation of Polaroid ID cards, and the way ordinary life in one of the city’s most exclusive addresses was upended in the wake of tragedy. Along the way, we explore the broader context of celebrity, obsession, and loss in late 1970s/early 1980s New York, and why this single piece of paper still feels so chilling today.
After having recently found out about the death of Film Critic Rex Reed I felt it was time to tell the full, and true story about how and why Rex Reed invited me to his Dakota apartment.
