Episode notes
Step-motherhood comes with plenty of milestones.
The first lost tooth. The first school play. The first time you accidentally leave a child standing in a high school parking lot.
Yes, I did that.
In this episode, I’m telling the story of the day I drove away with Hamilton and Grayson while Payton stood on the curb looking like an abandoned Disney princess.
The boys tried to warn me. I assumed they were joking. I even checked the backseat because I wasconvinced Payton was hiding on the floor, ready to pop up and announce that I had officially failed.
She was not hiding.
She was still at the school.
This is a story about blended families, sibling dynamics, stepmotherhood, guilt, resilience, and the kind ofmistake that becomes family folklore forever.
Payton survived. I apologized approximately 101 times. And now I do headcounts like I’m loading childrenonto Noah’s Ark—even though they’re adults.
Because sometimes love looks like getting everything right.
And sometimes it looks like making a U-turn, driving back as fast as you legally—or questionably—can, and saying, “I am so, so sorry.”
