The Mosaic Covenant

I. Scripture: The Mosaic Covenant contains very extensive detailed information, the

Scriptural account of the covenant extends from Exodus 20:1 to Deuteronomy 28:68.

II. The Participants

A. God and Israel (Exodus 19:3-8)

III. The Provisions: 613 commandments. Sealed by the Lord and Moses (Exodus 24:1-11)

1. 613 commandments: 365 were forbidden things, 248 things that should be done.

2. The Blessings and Judgments of the Law (Exodus 15:26; 19:3-8).

3. The Blood Sacrifice Added (Leviticus 17:11).

4. The Diet Restrictions Imposed.

5. The Death Penalty Expanded.

6. The Sign of the Covenant reaffirmed the practice of circumcision (Lev. 12:3).

7. The Token of the Covenant was the Sabbath. (5 Observations)

a. A sign Israel had been set apart by God (Exodus 31:12-17)

b. The Sabbath began with Moses, not Creation.

c. A day of rest, not a day of corporate worship.

d. Intended only for Israel and not the Church.

e. In force as long as the Mosaic Covenant is in force.

IV. The Purpose of the Law

-Not a means to salvation: Rom. 3:20, 28; Gal. 2:16; 3:11, 21.

1. Reveal the holiness of God and to reveal the standard of righteousness. (Rom 7:12)

2. Provide the rule of conduct for the Old Testament saints. (Psalm 119: 77, 97,103, 104)

3. To provide occasions for individual and corporate worship for Israel.

4. To keep the Jews a distinct people (Lev. 11:44- 45; Deut. 7:6; 14:1-2).

5. It served as the middle wall of partition as stated in Ephesians 2:11-16.

6. To reveal sin. (Romans 3:19-20, Romans 5:20, Romans 7:7)

7. To make one sin more. (Romans 4:15, I Corinthians 15:56)

8. To show us there was nothing we could do on our own to please God (Rom 7:14-25).

9. To drive one to faith according to Romans 8:1-4 and Galatians 3:24-25.
