Rambling #29 - On the allure of the Victorian goldfields with David Bannear
Rambling: Good blokes, great conversations. by Shunter & 8Ball
Episode notes
On their first ever Rambling road trip, Scott and Brian hit the road to their old stomping ground Bendigo. Along the way they stop at Castlemaine to chat to Victorian goldfields archaeologist David Bannear.
David is a leading expert on the central Victorian goldfields and is a leading advocate to have the region included on the UNESCO World Heritage register.
David chats to us about the importance of the goldfields to the evolution of Victoria as a colony, why gold was considered the "social mineral", and the social and environmental impact the gold rush had on the local area.
David also chats about how a working class young man from regional South Australia found himself studying archaeology at Cambridge and how he managed to survive his time there.
