How our criminal justice system obstructs media access – Something Worth Hearing

"We are just a pain in the ass and they don't want to hear from us." Canada’s open-court principle is meaningless if those in charge treat journalists as irritating interlopers. And they do, every single day. Journalists who cover the criminal justice system and courts from across Canada recently took part in a meeting to share stories of being denied access to public documents, shut out of virtual hearings they have every right to attend, and daily intentional and unintentional efforts to block the public from finding out information they have every legal right to hear about.

Talking Tasers & our surveillance culture – Something Worth Hearing

Tikaani Rhys was in Salish Park in downtown Chilliwack in July 2025 when she saw an RCMP officer interacting with some First Nations men who were drinking beer. The conversation escalated to the point where the officer had a man on the ground, kneed him in the back as he tried to handcuff him. Tikaani didn't like what she saw so she approached and asked questions. But she ended up not only getting arrested but Tasered, too. This week on Something Worth Hearing I show a video of the incident to co-producer Atlee James, also to friend of the podcast and lawyer Kyla Lee of Acumen Law, and I talk to both of them and to Tikaani about police use of force, mental health, safety, and our culture of surveillance where everything we do is caught on video.
