Comet C/2026A1, discovered in January 2026, is on a collision course with the Sun, expected to impact on 4th April 2026. Contrary to predictions, the comet is not a sun-grazer but a sun-diver, and will pass much closer to the Sun’s surface than previously thought. The comet’s size and trajectory suggest it could be the largest sun-diver recorded in history.

Comet C/2026A1 is on a collision course with the sun, expected to impact on 4th April. JPL data shows the comet will pass within 5,379 miles of the sun’s centre, contradicting claims of it being 160,000 km above the surface. The impact could be the largest ever observed and its effects are uncertain.
