Daniel 3:1-18 Bow or Burn
Episode notes
King Nebuchadnezzar sets up a ninety-foot golden image on the plain of Dura and orders every official in the empire to bow down when the music plays, on pain of being thrown into a blazing furnace. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refuse. Some Chaldeans report them, and the furious king gives them one more chance, mocking: "What god will be able to deliver you out of my hands?" Their answer is one of the boldest statements of faith in Scripture. Our God is able to deliver us, they say, but even if He does not, we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image. This passage asks what faithfulness looks like when the culture demands we bow, and whether our trust in God depends on how things turn out. This points to King Jesus, who is the only one who did not bow, and because of that, he is the one worth bowing to.
