EP147 - The Cold Open — Christian Music, False Prophets & Talking Across the Divide

The plan was a cold open. It turned into the whole episode. Reggie and Brian follow the conversation wherever it goes, from why Christian music sounds the way it does to a gym conversation with a man who assumed a Christian couldn't talk to him, and on to why political conversation keeps collapsing. KEY TOPICS: - Why there is so little good music about ordinary life as a Christian - What counts as worship music, and playing Bethel and Hillsong songs in church - Self-proclaimed prophets and faith healers - "Those weren't Christians": disagreement is not hatred - Having a real conversation without the party labels - Dogs, shelters, and whether three is too many - Titus and a church that has been playing defense SCRIPTURE REFERENCES: Titus 3:10 RESOURCES MENTIONED: - Brad Wampler, Rooted in Logos podcast - Bob Dylan's gospel-era albums: Slow Train Coming (1979), Saved (1980), Shot of Love (1981) - Bourbon & Beyond music festival, Louisville, KY — R&B Talks: 2 Guys. 2 Chairs. EP146 - Blessed, Not Lucky — Why Blessing Was Never Earned

Why do Christians say "blessed" after a promotion but never in a hospital waiting room? Reggie and Brian take on the most overused word in Christian vocabulary: how it became a synonym for luck, where the instinct to read God's approval off our circumstances comes from, and what Jesus meant when he called the mourning and the persecuted blessed. The answer runs through the Beatitudes, Job, and Luke 13, and lands on a standing no circumstance can move, because nobody ever earned it. KEY TOPICS: - "Blessed" as a Christian word for "lucky," and why it goes silent in hard seasons - The reward-and-punishment ledger: the disciples in John 9 and Job's friends - Sowing and reaping vs. blessing: related, not the same - The Beatitudes and the woes of Luke 6 - Job 1:21 and blessing the name in the middle of loss - Luke 13 and Romans 3: why blessing was never earned SCRIPTURE REFERENCES: Matthew 5:3–12, Luke 6:20–26, John 9:1–3, Luke 13:1–5, Job 1:21, Job 42:7, Romans 3:10–12, 23, Galatians 6:7, Deuteronomy 28 RESOURCES MENTIONED: - Scripture read on air: Legacy Standard Bible (LSB) — R&B Talks: 2 Guys. 2 Chairs. EP145 - Not a Species — Wings, Guardian Angels, and Where Our Picture Came From

Say the word "angel" and almost everyone pictures the same thing — wings, a white robe, a halo. Where did that come from? Because it mostly didn't come from Scripture. Part 2 of our Unseen Realm series: what the Hebrew word behind "angel" actually means, how many angels the Bible names, whether one is assigned to you, and what they looked like the handful of times they showed up. KEY TOPICS: "Angel" is a job description, not a species — malʾāk means "one sent" Scripture names two angels. Every other name came from somewhere else The guardian angel, graded: dogma, clearly taught, or pious inference No wings, no halos — what the text actually describes Whether a believer can command an angel SCRIPTURE REFERENCES: Matthew 18:10, Hebrews 1:14, Zechariah 5, Daniel, Tobit 12 RESOURCES MENTIONED: Michael S. EP144 - Guardians of the Garden — Did We Hand Our Kids a New Fruit?

Brian brings a premise he's been sitting on for weeks: God forbade the tree to keep Adam and Eve from knowing evil — so did we build a second tree of knowledge, and then open a fruit stand for our kids? Reggie doesn't buy it. What follows is the longest sustained disagreement the two of them have had on mic, and it ends somewhere neither of them started. KEY TOPICS: Whether the fruit in Eden was ever evil on its own Unfiltered access, kids with phones, and whether the internet is morally neutral IQ, cognition, AI shortcuts, and what technology has actually done to us Adam as guardian of the garden, and what men shucked Whether Christians are guardians of the open world or only of their own households The Lindsay Clancy verdict and the public support around it SCRIPTURE REFERENCES: Genesis 1:31, Genesis 2:15-17, Genesis 3:1-7, Leviticus 5:17, Ezekiel 33:6, Matthew 28:19-20 RESOURCES MENTIONED: Commonwealth v. EP143 - The Other Half — Friendship, Community, and the Household We Miss

Reggie's close friend lost his wife to stage four pancreatic cancer about six weeks after diagnosis. Standing at the funeral, Reggie realized he had known his friend since high school and had never really known her. This episode is what came out of that — a return to our male friendship episode from 101 episodes ago, and an honest look at what we left out. KEY TOPICS: - Revisiting the Lindsay Clancy case and where our position has landed - Why a friend is a family member you're not related to by blood - The household as the missing piece in how we define friendship - Men, isolation, and why the phone doesn't ring when things get hard - How community used to be a neighborhood and is now a single household - House-to-house language in the New Testament church - What happens three or four weeks after the funeral, when everyone stops calling - What not to say to a widow or widower SCRIPTURE REFERENCES: Acts 2, Romans 16, 1 Corinthians 16, Genesis 3, Romans 12:15 RESOURCES MENTIONED: - R&B Talks EP42 - The Battle for Male Friendship — R&B Talks: 2 Guys. 2 Chairs. EP142 - The Face of Evil — Lindsay Clancy, Candace Owens, and a Law Signed in Massachusetts

No guide, no brief, no research — just two guys talking about what's been sitting on them all week. A mother on trial in Massachusetts for killing her three children. A commentator who took $300,000 to defend her theories about Charlie Kirk's death and showed up without evidence. And a governor signing away every statutory limit on abortion after 24 weeks. Brian's prayer through all of it: that the face of evil becomes so blatantly visible we reject it out of the part of us built in the image of God. KEY TOPICS: The Lindsay Clancy trial — where postpartum illness stops explaining and premeditation starts Forgiveness and consequence do not run concurrently Candace Owens, the $300,000 debate, and evidence a court would accept Massachusetts and the Prioritizing Patient Access to Care Act Becoming foster parents, and what it costs a family to say yes SCRIPTURE REFERENCES: Luke 23:39–43, Genesis 1:27, James 1:27 RESOURCES MENTIONED: People — Lindsay Clancy trial coverage NewsNation — Massachusetts abortion law Massachusetts H.5595, the Prioritizing Patient Access to Care Act Candace Owens vs. Andrew Wilson, PBD Podcast, August 14, 2026 — R&B Talks: 2 Guys. 2 Chairs. EP141 - The Unseen Realm — Part 1 — What's Actually There

Most of us were handed two categories for the spiritual world: angels and demons. The Bible has considerably more than two. In Part 1 of a five-part series, we set the rules we'll use for the rest of it — then go to the text and see what's actually in the room. KEY TOPICS: - How the two-category picture came through translation, and what got compressed - Four types of claims — textual, historical, experiential, physical — and why mixing them is where arguments go wrong - The manuscript tradition is stable: what a textual variant is, and what it isn't - Deuteronomy 32:8 and the divine council - Elohim as a residence term rather than a rank - Ha-satan: a job description before it's ever a name - Who isn't in the room — the biblical text has no category for the human dead wandering houses - What the science on hauntings can and cannot actually measure SCRIPTURE REFERENCES: Deuteronomy 32:8, Deuteronomy 32:17, Deuteronomy 18:10-12, Psalm 82:1, Psalm 89:5-7, 1 Kings 22:19-23, Genesis 1:26-27, Genesis 3, Job 1:6, Job 38:4-7, Isaiah 8:19, 1 Samuel 28:13, 1 Corinthians 8:5-6 RESOURCES MENTIONED: - Michael S. EP139 - AI for the Non-Operator — Context, Instructions, and the Berean Test

Brian showed up with a thought he couldn't shake: what actually separates an active Christian from a lazy one, and what does discipleship look like when the rubber meets the road? Twenty minutes in, we did something we've been meaning to do since EP137 — put the question to an AI, live, with Brian driving. Same question, four different ways. The answers weren't close, and the only thing that changed was what the machine knew about the person asking. KEY TOPICS: - Active vs. lazy Christian — and what biblical discipleship actually requires - Knowing the Bible vs. understanding it, and treating the text as history rather than allegory - Why a bare prompt returns a hedged, generic answer - Building a statement of faith the AI can reference - Instruction sets: confidence tagging, demanding pushback, requiring clarifying questions - Verifying a viral claim live — and watching the tool correct the premise of the question - Model selection and thinking effort - The Berean standard: AI points you somewhere, you go check it SCRIPTURE REFERENCES: Matthew 4:19, Mark 1:17, Luke 9:23, Luke 14:26-33, Matthew 28:19-20, John 8:31, John 13:35, John 15:8, 1 Corinthians 11:1, Acts 17:11 RESOURCES MENTIONED: - Claude instructions and memory settings — docs.claude.com - R&B Talks EP137 (the AI episode this follows) — R&B Talks: 2 Guys. 2 Chairs. EP138 - A Different Religion — Progressive Christianity, Deconstruction & the Faith Once Delivered

Is progressive Christianity a reform movement within the faith, or a different religion wearing Christian vocabulary? Guest Brad Wampler (Rooted in Logos) joins us to read the movement's own Eight Points aloud, trace the lineage from Schleiermacher through the emergent church, and follow the funding trail from a 1922 Rockefeller-backed pamphlet to The After Party curriculum a century later. KEY TOPICS: The Eight Points of Progressive Christianity, from the movement's own self-definition Machen's 1923 verdict: not a variant of Christianity, but a different religion that keeps the vocabulary The deconstruction pipeline: church hurt → unanswered questions → relocated authority → exit Exegesis vs. eisegesis, the Five Solas, and why sexuality is the flagship application Barna's October 2025 numbers: a generational reversal led by young men SCRIPTURE REFERENCES: Jude 3, Jude 22-23, Gen 3:1, Gen 1:27, Gen 2:24, Matt 19:4-6, John 14:6, Gal 3:28, 1 Cor 6:11, 1 Cor 6:18, Matt 7:21-23, Acts 17:11, 1 Thess 5:21 RESOURCES MENTIONED: Machen, Christianity and Liberalism (1923) Fosdick, "Shall the Fundamentalists Win?" EP137 - Portal or Tool? — AI, Discernment, and the Church

Brian returns after two solo AI episodes to ask where the line is between AI as an open portal and AI as a governed tool. Reggie opens the hood on how these models are actually built — and the Barna numbers show the church adopting AI far faster than it can discern it. KEY TOPICS: • How large language models are actually built — training, constitutions, priorities — and why none of it has a theological anchor • Barna (Dec 2025): 87% of Protestant pastors use AI; only 12% are comfortable with it teaching, while 1 in 3 practicing Christians already are • Portal vs. tool: the operator, not the model, decides whether AI is additive or corrosive • AI psychosis and spiritual delusion spirals — why sycophancy plus blind trust is dangerous • The landing: discernment, not withdrawal — test everything, hold fast to what is good SCRIPTURE REFERENCES: 1 Thessalonians 5:21, Acts 17:11 RESOURCES MENTIONED: • Barna Research pastor survey on AI (December 2025) • Anthropic — Claude's Constitution • OpenAI — Model Spec — R&B Talks: 2 Guys. 2 Chairs.
