The church in Ephesus had lost the love they once had. Do you truly know you are loved by God? What do you think the Spirit is saying to us (PBC) as a church today? Might there be something we ought to repent of? Are there people we find it hard to love? Can the Holy Spirit help us love them? How might we rekindle a greater love for God in our own lives, both personally and as a church?

Jon reads Revelation 1 and Pastor Dan Foster begins the new sermon series 'What is the Spirit saying to the Church?', based on the book of Revelation at Pembury Baptist Church on Sunday 4th October 2026. There are several testimonies and words after the sermon. Further questions for reflection: Have you ever tried reading the book of Revelation before? How did you find it? John was ‘in the Spirit on the Lord’s day’ (verse 10). Do you ever manage to set time aside to be with God? In Revelation 1 we see an amazing description of the risen and glorified Jesus (see verses 13-16). Is your Jesus too small or too familiar? ‘When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead.’ (Verse 17). Can you picture yourself in John’s position, face down before Jesus? Can you imagine him placing his hand on you and saying ‘Fear not’?

If you would like to think further on this passage and sermon, here are a few questions that might help: 1. Nebuchadnezzar insisted people bow down and worship his golden statue. Dan suggests we have bowed down before the god of materialism in our day. What do you think about that - do you agree? 2. People were forced to worship the golden statue. God doesn’t force us to worship him but looks for us to worship him freely, in Spirit and in truth. How can we choose to do that in everyday life? 3. Maybe you or someone you know is facing a difficult time or feeling under pressure right now. Can you take heart from the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego - that God is with you even in the midst of it all? 4. Do you have a regular pattern of praying, of coming before God? Something that will help sustain you through moments of pressure? 5. God acts powerfully to save Shadrach, Meschach and Abednego - it’s a miracle. Can you pray God will move in power? Where could you believe him for a miracle? 6. 'Keep your eyes on Him, even in the midst of the fire’. Take a moment to pause and set your heart upon God.

If you would like to further reflect on this passage and sermon, here are some questions to reflect on: Have you ever had a dream that has stuck with you? Do you think God was speaking to you? If so, what do you think he was saying? Can you think of a time when you prayed really desperate prayers? When you had no other option? What did you learn through that experience? Maybe you’ve heard a sermon, a word of prophecy or been prayed for and God really spoke to you through it. How did you respond? The rock described in Nebuchadnezzar’s dream (see verses 34-35, 45) represents God’s kingdom ‘that endures for ever’ (v44). Where would you love to see God’s kingdom advance? Think of a friend or family member who really needs to know a real relationship with God, rather than artificial religion. Could you commit to pray for them?
