Episode notes
Whitmore® Envirolube XE Extreme is a non-asphaltic open gear lubricant engineered to stop scuffing wear and surface micro-welding on severely loaded equipment — and this episode breaks down exactly how non-asphaltic lubricants prevent gear wear on ball mills, kilns, and large rotating machinery running under extreme pressure.
Conventional asphaltic open gear lubricants bake hard, build up carbon deposits, and blind your inspection windows. Envirolube XE Extreme replaces asphalt with a synthetic polymer, resin, and high-viscosity petroleum distillate formula that stays soft on the gear and flows cleanly from gear guards — no scrapers, no specialty solvents. Maintenance crews can inspect tooth contact patterns with a strobe light while the machine runs, and the spent product passes the EPA Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure, so it is classified as TCLP-safe, not characteristic hazardous waste. The wear numbers from third-party FZG testing (ISO 14635-3, settings A/2.8/50 and A/2.76/50) are the real story. After 12 standard load stages, Envirolube XE Extreme recorded a mass loss of only 9.2 mg — versus 21 mg, 32 mg, and 51 mg for three competitive products. Specific mass loss landed at 0.067 mg/kWh, a fraction of competitor rates ranging from 0.1390 to 0.1800 mg/kWh. In the 30-hour extended wear test at load Stage 10, the product held mass loss to 20 mg while competitors shed as much as 78 mg — and gears still showed their original manufacturing crosshatch pattern with zero polishing or scuffing. That is up to 66% wear reduction versus conventional options. See the Medium-viscosity grade: https://www.pe-energy.com/product/envirolube-xe-extreme-medium-open-gear-lubricants/
Extreme-pressure performance is backed by ASTM D-2783 Four Ball EP testing with a weld point of 800 kg and ASTM D-4172 Four Ball Wear confirming a scar width of just 0.50 mm. That combination of film strength and low scar width is what keeps ball mill gear faces intact through high-shock load cycles. The product meets OEM specs for Falk, Metso Minerals, and FL Smidth equipment — drop it directly into existing sump systems or run it through airless automatic spray systems with intermittent cycles of 15–20 minutes for large ball mill gears.
Two viscosity grades cover your temperature range. The Medium grade (1,080 cSt @ 40°C) pumps in Lincoln Ventmeter testing at 400 psi down to 5°F (-15°C) — right specification for cold-climate outdoor mills. The Heavy grade (4,000 cSt @ 40°C) is rated to 20°F (-7°C) and is the go-to where maximum film thickness under shock loading is the priority. Drum quantities of ENVIROLUBE XE 680 are also stocked for high-volume programs: https://www.pe-energy.com/product/envirolube-xe-680-drum-open-gear-lubricants/ — wholesale orders scale from a single spare drum to a full fleet rollout. Spec the right grade in your next RFP and eliminate the asphaltic buildup problem for good.
