George Washington bred foxhounds at Mount Vernon and helped create the American Foxhound, keeping more than thirty hounds in his journals with names like Sweet Lips, Drunkard, and Madame Moose. One of them, Vulcan, once stole an entire ham from the family table, and Washington laughed so hard he told the story to his own dinner guests.
