Only Lawsuits Ep. 49: Barry University Lawsuit, Glen-Peter Ahlers & Meta’s $17B Settlement

In Episode 49 of Only Lawsuits, Josh and Mike are joined once again by Mario Cecilio for a conversation about institutional responsibility, the lawsuit involving former Barry University law professor Glen-Peter Ahlers, and Meta’s massive multistate settlement over social media addiction and youth safety. This episode dives into: Barry University & the Glen-Peter Ahlers Lawsuit – The team discusses the lawsuit involving Barry University and former law professor Glen-Peter Ahlers. Ahlers was arrested in February and charged with 50 counts related to the alleged possession of child sexual abuse material. A former student has also sued Barry and Ahlers after police alleged that he attempted to secretly photograph her during class. Ahlers also faces a separate video voyeurism charge. The bigger question is: When can an institution be held responsible for the alleged actions of one of its employees? Josh, Mike and Mario discuss whether Barry should have uncovered potential warning signs, how thorough employers should be when hiring people for positions of trust, and how negligent hiring or supervision claims could come into play if the allegations are proven. Meta’s $17.1 Billion Settlement – The conversation then turns to Meta’s landmark multistate settlement involving Facebook and Instagram. Meta agreed to pay up to $17.1 billion and implement new child-safety measures to resolve allegations that its platforms used addictive features, exposed young users to harmful content, and misled the public about certain risks. Meta did not admit wrongdoing. How Much Responsibility Does Meta Bear? – The team debates how much responsibility social media companies should have for the way their platforms affect children and teenagers. Are algorithms simply giving users more of what they engage with, or are platforms intentionally designed to keep people scrolling? The discussion explores addictive design, algorithm-driven content, youth exposure, parental controls, age verification, and whether stronger safeguards should become the industry standard. From university accountability and employee vetting to social media addiction and Big Tech responsibility, Episode 49 asks where personal responsibility ends and institutional responsibility begins. 🎙️ Only Lawsuits – Real talk about the law, business, politics, and the world around us.
