Acoustics in Historical Spaces

Episode notes
Michael Holmes has been the artistic director of the Washington Cornett and Sackbutt Ensemble since 1998, recreating historical performances of music of the churches, chapels, and chambers of European courts of the Renaissance and early baroque era. He will discuss acoustical and architectural considerations of large spaces that were imagined by the composers who crafted their music with creative spatial effects and natural reverb in mind. We will examine how engineers can record these recreations in ways that bring out the intended effects of the period.
