11_30 - The Gospel of Exodus: Loving Contentment - Kody Alvarez - Lead Pastor

Today we are concluding our study in the Ten Commandments. I hope it has been a blessing, and you have wrestled with the ethical implications of the law in your everyday life. The Ten Commandments are the summation of all the laws. God has given us the law so that we can know how God desires His people to live. At Mount Sinai, God gave Israel His law, but only after they entered into a covenant relationship with Him. God's grace precedes the law. The law shows us how to live, but it doesn't grant us access to God. The heart of the law is to love God and love your neighbor as yourself. We have seen that the first four commands were specific to loving God, and the last six are about loving our neighbors as a result of loving God. We love God and our neighbor by honoring our parents, by loving life, by loving our spouse, by respecting their property, and by only speaking what is true, and we love God and our neighbor by being content with the gifts that God has given us.

Exodus 20: 7 The Ten Commandments are the core of God’s law. God has given us the law so that we can know how God desires His people to live. In our study, we are trying to understand the Ten Commandments and the ethical implications of the commandments, understanding that they represent categories for sins. The Ten Commandments are the summation of all the laws. At Mount Sinai, God is giving Israel His law. He is writing these Ten Commandments on stone tablets. Before God gave Israel the Law, Israel freely entered into a covenant relationship with God where they promised Him their love, devotion, and to keep all of His laws and statutes. I have pointed this out for the last few weeks, but I want you always to remember: God’s covenant precedes the law, the requirement to walk in obedience. This reveals that the law isn’t what gives us a relationship with God; God’s grace grants us a relationship with Him. Though the law is the standard by which all humanity is going to be judged, it is not what grants access to God. The First Commandment is about worshipping the right God. The Second Commandment is about worshipping the right God the right way. The Third Commandment is about honoring this God in speech and deed.

10_5 - The Gospel of Exodus: Worshipping the Right God the Right Way - Kody Alvarez - Lead Pastor

Exodus 20: 4-6 In our study, we are trying to understand the Ten Commandments and the ethical implications of the commandments, understanding that they represent categories for sins without God having to enumerate every little possible thing. The Ten Commandments are the summation of all the laws. Remember the context: Israel, 50 days free from Egyptian slavery, stands at Mount Sinai where God descends in smoke and fire. At Mount Sinai, God is giving Israel His law. He is writing these Ten Commandments on stone tablets. Before God gave Israel the Law, Israel freely entered into a covenant relationship with God where they promised Him their love, devotion, and to keep all of His laws and statutes. This is an important point that I want you always to remember: God’s covenant precedes the law, the requirement to walk in obedience. This reveals that the law isn’t what gives us a relationship with God; God’s grace grants us a relationship with Him. Though the law is the standard by which all humanity is going to be judged, it is not what grants access to God.
