It’s Oscars Month here on Not Another 2001 Movie Podcast, and we’re kicking things off with NO MAN’S LAND, the winner of Best Foreign Language Film at the 74th Academy Awards in 2002.

NO MAN’S LAND was the first narrative feature film directed by Danis Tanović, who also wrote and scored the movie. It stars Branko Duric as Ciki, a Bosnian soldier, and Rene Bitorajac as Nino, a Serbian soldier, who get trapped together in a trench between the warring frontlines.

In addition to the film — which, spoiler, we all loved — we talk about some of the silly things we’d lay our lives on the line for, the demise of cigarettes and the history of international cinema’s recognition, and lack thereof, by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
