Being late becomes, “I’m always late.” A messy room becomes, “I’m a mess.” Falling behind becomes, “I can never keep up.”
A behavior, mistake, or difficult moment can quickly become a conclusion about who we are. These messages may seem insignificant on their own, but they can accumulate and influence how we see and treat ourselves.
