In an investigation into the cardiovascular health disparities among racially and ethnically diverse populations, the Northern Manhattan Study (NOMAS) examined the correlation between sleep duration and subclinical carotid atherosclerosis, a precursor to stroke. The study controlled for a range of sociodemographic and lifestyle variables. The results, based on 1,553 community-dwelling adults, revealed a pronounced association between long sleep duration (≥9 hours) and increased presence and area of carotid plaque, independent of other risk factors. Conversely, short sleep duration (<7 hours) and daytime sleepiness showed no significant correlation with carotid atherosclerosis markers. These findings suggest that extended  ...
