The Twenty-Year Grudge: Is Iolite a Villain or a Victim? | The Whistling Swordsman
A broken arm shows up on an x-ray. A broken family doesn't.
This episode we go after the man behind everything: Iolite, the grandfather's brother. One host argues he's a tragedy — the son who grew up in the crushing shadow of a living legend, unloved by his own father, then found and weaponized by Eon Pax, who is very good at spotting a crack and widening it. The other argues sympathy is a trap, because whatever was done to him, he spent twenty years patiently engineering the destruction of a child who had never wronged him.
We get into the moment on the Congo War battlefield where he locks eyes with Xeonix — and why his reaction is the most damning thing about him. He doesn't rage. He doesn't break. He calculates. He deduces a bloodline from a face and a footwork pattern, and starts building a plan that will take two decades to spring.
Then there's Malamar. Planted years in advance, aging forward one ordinary day at a time, eating breakfast with the boy he was sent to destroy. We argue about whether any childhood wound can survive contact with that.
Both of us concede ground. Neither of us wins. Tell us where you draw the line.
