💩 The Great Stink — When London Couldn't Escape Its Own River
In the summer of 1858, London had a problem that was impossible to ignore—the River Thames stank.
Years of sewage, industrial waste, and other filth had accumulated in the river, and a hot, dry summer made the smell unbearable. The stench reached homes, businesses, and even the Houses of Parliament.
Londoners tried to protect themselves with chloride of lime, while politicians finally realized something had to be done.
The crisis helped push Parliament toward the construction of Joseph Bazalgette's massive new sewer system.
