Episode notes
🐦 The Great Emu War — When Australia Went to War with Birds
In 1932, farmers in Western Australia were facing a serious problem. Thousands of emus were moving through farmland, damaging crops and fences.
The Australian government sent soldiers armed with Lewis machine guns to help deal with the invasion.
What followed was a bizarre military operation involving difficult terrain, ammunition problems, fast-moving emus, and a surprisingly stubborn enemy.
The operation became known as the Great Emu War.
But technically, Australia never declared war on the emus.
