The road to Karnstein grows darker.

In Chapters X–XIII of J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla, Laura and her father encounter the grieving General Spielsdorf, who finally reveals the horrifying circumstances surrounding the death of his niece.

His story introduces a mysterious young woman named Millarca, whose behavior and influence bear an unsettling resemblance to Carmilla. As the group reaches the ruined village and chapel of Karnstein, legends of vampires, hidden graves, and the long-dead Countess Mircalla begin to bring the mystery into focus.
